Angoulême, Louis-Antoine de Bourbon, duke of
(1775-1844)
   last dauphin of France
Born at Versailles, Louis-Antoine de Bourbon, the last dauphin of France, was the son of the count d'Artois (the future charles x) and Marie-Thérèse of Savoy. He left France with his family at the beginning of the revolution (1789) and married his cousin, marie-thérèse charlotte, duchess of angoulême in exile (1799). As part of General Wellington's forces, he entered bordeaux in March 1814, then attempted in vain to initiate uprisings in the Midi against napoléon i, during the hundred days. A member of the military expedition to Spain sent in 1823 to help King Ferdinand VIII, he took part in the capture of Trocadero. Louis-Antoine de Bourbon became dauphin on the succession of his father to the throne in 1824, but he renounced his own claim to the throne after the revolution of July 1830.
